Dark and powerful

Listening to the song Echogenetic by Front Line Assembly. Getting a mix this dark and powerful without being muddy is skill set I need. And the vocal production is amazing on this song. I was listening to old 16 Volt the other day. The song Everyday Everything is loud and bright but also punchy and low. I am pretty sure automation is the secret. The mix I’m working on now is the first one I’ve done that sounds sort of professional. Automating EQ, parallel busses and volume creates the depth and feeling. It keeps things interesting especially in repetitive music. Some of the changes are so subtle but they make a big impact. I can’t find any good videos about mixing low-mids or about expansion/upward expansion. Waves C1 comp/gate/expander is difficult for me to use but I’m getting the idea. So far I’m understanding that expander is basically a smoother way to gate things (sort of). It’s been helpful. I’m still sketchy on getting the settings dialed in correctly. I’m really interested in how I can use this with automation. And I’m just starting to experiment with upward expansion and compression. This might also be useful to automate on a parallel bus to make synths breath and move front to back. I also need a new midi keyboard controller. The Novation LaunchKey 25 is not a quality key bed. It has zero expression and it feels cheap and uncomfortable. Not sure if anyone reads this but I’m having fun documenting my journey from near death to enjoying audio engineering again. I’m grateful to be alive and I’m grateful for people like David who have quality advice.
