I did a lot of studying this past week. It’s paying off. My mixes were not improving and I was stuck in a rut. I had a lot to learn about parallel processing. It’s making a dramatic difference. Same with automation. I was doing the simple volume/pan automation but the real magic happens when you automate everything else. I’m still struggling with mixing low-mid frequencies. Especially with multiple synth tracks. And I’m completely guessing on sub frequencies. I have Kali LP6’s and a pair of headphones. I’ve heard people say things like, “I know my headphones and my speakers…bla, bla, bla.” Well, I know mine too. And I KNOW they do not handle frequencies in the sub range. Yes, there are some tricks to try to get it right (hand on the console or a small speaker to feel the vibration) but I am absolutely guessing. I also have no acoustic treatment in my room, a wall to the left and no wall to the right ‍♂️ so I understand there are limits to how clean my mixes will be. I’m still happy to be improving and eventually I will have a better room.
